Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!  The U.S. Embassy to the Holy See celebrated with our friends and partners from the Vatican at Villa Richardson this week.  Chargée d’Affaires Laura Hochla expressed her gratitude for the enduring relationship between our two nations in her remarks, “Though our formal diplomatic relations began just over 40 years ago, our longstanding relationship with the Holy See is rooted in a shared commitment to peace and to the dignity of every human life.  These are goals we pursue together, inspired by the moral leadership and compassion of Pope Francis, whose legacy continues to guide us.

This 4th of July, we also celebrate a new chapter: the historic election of the first Pope born and raised in the United States. We are thrilled to witness the beginning of Pope Leo’s pontificate and stand ready to support him as he embarks on this remarkable journey of global spiritual leadership.”

Statement by Chargée d'affaires on Occasion of Pope Francis's Death

Along with President Trump, Vice President Vance, and Secretary Rubio, I am deeply saddened by the news of Pope Francis’s passing.  We join the Catholic faithful around the world in honoring the legacy of Pope Francis.  His Holiness was a caring and courageous shepherd for the Catholic Church and the faithful for the 12 years he occupied the See of Saint Peter.  Pope Francis took his regnal as an homage to Saint Francis of Assisi because of his concern for the well-being of the poorest among us.

I have interacted with Pope Francis on numerous occasions, and I always admired his patience, his readiness to listen, and his unfailing sense of humor.  Pope Francis was intent to lead the Church in such a way that would enrich the lives of all faithful.  His humility was equally impressive.  On numerous occasions, he would invite the poor into the Vatican for a meal.  These events were not advertised beforehand nor discussed by the press, and his involvement would only be revealed afterwards.  He prioritized the dignity of each person with whom he came in contact. The Catholic Church will greatly miss the leadership and guidance of Pope Francis.  As the world mourns, we express our hope that the College of Cardinals can once again elect a pope who is as compassionate, patient, kind, and courageous as Pope Francis was.  May God bless the soul of Pope Francis and the next man who will replace him as Bishop of Rome.
